NIHR Research Professorships

This scheme supports early research careers to encourage the practical application of research findings. These awards are open to health researchers who are currently at consultant grade or equivalent. NIHR CSO Healthcare Science Research Fellowship Programme

The Chief Scientific Officer, in collaboration with the NIHR, supports the Doctoral and Post-doctoral Healthcare Science Fellowships. This scheme offers funding at both the doctoral and postdoctoral level to support the development of healthcare science research capacity. These Fellowships are intended to support those with experience of working in the NHS to further develop their careers in research. Strategy for UK Life Sciences

Scientific research is seen to be a key strength and resource of the UK economy. The UK Life Science strategy sets out the intention to strengthen the life science research sector by recommending actions to overcome a range of barriers preventing innovation.

Research Excellence Framework

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) system assesses the quality of research in higher education institutions and will be completed in 2014. The results of the REF are used to inform the allocation of funds by research funding bodies, as well as evaluating improvements made in the research of higher education institutions.
